The Biodiversity Crisis and its Governance

by Christine von Weizsäcker

About the Presentation

Some aspects of the interrelated crises of biodiversity, climate change, poverty and human rights will be highlighted along the lines of the decisions of the Tenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Nagoya in October 2010:
the dramatic rate of biodiversity loss from species to whole ecosystems, and the failure of the international community to reduce the loss, partially due to the failure of addressing the drivers of biodiversity loss and partially to the lack of reliable funding,
the dependence of human well-being on ecosystems, their functions and services,
the specific vulnerability of the poor and the relationship to the Millennium Development Goals,
the need to integrate biodiversity, climate change, human rights and development policies,
the importance of two new Protocols from COP 10 Nagoya as a saving grace for the Rio-Process of international environmental governance,
the specific role of the assessment of biodiversity impacts and the precautionary principle in decision-making regarding emerging technologies, such as geo-engineering, genetically engineered trees, synthetic biology, and new types of land uses designed to mitigate climate change, like bio-fuels and carbon sink/ carbon capture technologies.
